Enrolling In Medicare
When you are turning 65, you have a 7-month window to enroll in Medicare. You can enroll in Medicare 3 months before your birthday month and as late as 3 months after your birthday month. It is recommended that you enroll as soon as possible to ensure you have coverage and avoid any delays.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
Enrolling with a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan, you must enroll in Medicare Part B because Medigap only works with Original Medicare (Part A and Part B).
However, Part D (prescription drug coverage) is optional but highly recommended. If you do not enroll in a standalone Part D plan when first eligible and decide to get it later, you may face a late enrollment penalty unless you have other creditable drug coverage.

See my blog article on what Medicare doesn’t cover.
1. Enrolling in Medicare Part A & Part B
- Online: Visit SSA.gov and apply through the Social Security website.
- By Phone: Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778).
- In Person: Visit your local Social Security office to apply.
If you’re already receiving Social Security benefits, you will be automatically enrolled in Part A and Part B at age 65. You will receive your Medicare card in the mail about 3 months before your 65th birthday.
If you are NOT automatically enrolled, you need to apply during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) (which starts 3 months before your 65th birthday and lasts for 3 months after).
2. Enrolling in Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Plan)
- Compare plans at Medicare.gov to find a Part D plan that fits your needs.
- Enroll online through Medicare.gov, directly with the insurance company, or by calling 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
- Work with a licensed insurance agent to review your options and enroll.
Important: If you don’t enroll in Part D when first eligible and don’t have other creditable drug coverage, you may face a late enrollment penalty when you sign up later.
